ASCEND
Project Overview

Ascend is a veteran living community located in Fargo, ND that promotes social and environmental sustainability, comfort and education of the members within the community. Ascend means to climb or rise up. One of the goals for the living community is to help veterans that are new to life after service rise up and find a place they can thrive in. It is focused for veterans who have just exited the service and are looking to reenter society again. Ascend assists in the transition from the service to civilian life and is open to all veterans  but targeted to the ages 30-40 demographic.

The color palette selected for this project includes shades of blue and green. These colors represent tranquility and are inspired by greenery and nature. Green makes you feel optimistic and refreshed, symbolizing health and new beginnings. Blue makes you feel safe and relaxed, evoking feelings of calmness, security, and trust. Using these colors in the veterans living facility creates a sense of relaxation and secureness, giving the veterans a place where they can be comfortable and feel at home in. Materials and finishes selected for this project are antimicrobial and easy to clean. This makes a significant impact on the sustainable performance of the veteran living facility and extends the life-cycle of the materials. Life-cycle approach was used to consider the environmental impacts generated by each phase of production, use and the disposal of materials. This space also considers environmental factors as well as human well-being.
